Walter, a Colorado native, attended Arapahoe High School in Littleton before moving to Boulder in the mid-nineties to pursue an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado. During this time he became interested in lighting engineering and decided to focus on the courses offered by the CU’s Lighting Program. After earning his undergraduate degree, he moved to Aspen, Colorado where he worked as a lighting designer with Robert Singer & Associates.
Walter soon returned to the University of Colorado for his graduate studies in Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. Initially focusing on architectural acoustics, his M.S. research was in the area of thermoacoustics. Through this experience he gained a solid foundation in acoustics, and for his doctoral research he decided to combine his two interests, acoustics and lighting. To that end, Walter worked closely with Prof. David DiLaura and Prof. Ralph Muehleisen on a research project to develop radiative transfer methods for modeling acoustic energy. After receiving his Ph.D., Walter spent 7 years working in both the lighting and acoustical fields, in the USA and abroad.
Walter joined University of Colorado Faculty in January 2012, where he teaches lighting and acoustics courses in the Building Systems Program in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. Walter is proud to have been a part of CU’s Lighting Program as a student, and he is honored and excited to carry on the great tradition which has defined the Lighting Program for decades.
Walter lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife, Jennifer, and son, Charlie.
