CURRICULUM
MC-EDC emphasizes the importance of integrated and participatory solutions to humanitarian development by educating globally responsible engineering students and professionals. The EDC curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels allows students to explore in depth issues critical to understanding the developing world while at the same time fulfilling what is expected of them in traditional engineering education. Students are expected to work on real projects as part of their education.
EDC serves as a convener for a number of courses in engineering, sustainability, appropriate technology, renewable energy, international education and development, public health, social entrepreneurship, public policy, and various fields of humanities.
Students interested in community service and international development through EDC have several options in the Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) Department at CU Boulder.
-
For graduate students, an EDC track is available in the MS/PhD program in Environmental Engineering. EDC is also an area of emphasis in the MS/PhD program in Civil Systems. Finally, EDC can also be custom designed as an emphasis area in the Building Systems program and the Construction Engineering and Management program.
-
For CVEN undergraduate students, check the EDC Track Advising Guide for CVEN students and faculty. Students follow a typical CVEN curriculum and study developing world issues in some of their socio-humanistic and technical electives. Senior design projects emphasize sustainable community development.
Graduate students interested in EDC must apply through the CEAE Department (application process) and mention their interest in EDC graduate studies.
The EDC undergraduate curriculum has been designed around the recommendations for general engineering education suggested in the ASCE Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century and by ABET (criteria 3 and 4).
