Four letters of recommendation (academic) and two original transcripts from each college or university attended are required. These transcripts must be sent to us directly from the school that issues them. If issued to applicant, they must be received in a sealed envelope from the issuing university. Please note that your application must be complete before it will be processed. The Graduate Committee will look closely at your area of specialization, your undergraduate degree and GPA, your recommendation letters and your statement of purpose (question #6 on Part II). The Civil Engineering Department does not require a GRE (CU-Boulder GRE Code 4841) score but strongly recommends that a score be submitted especially for Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship (TA/RA) consideration.
The majority of Teaching Assistantships are awarded during March for the academic year beginning in the fall semester. Students should contact professors in their specialization area for Research Assistantship availability. If you are interested in applying for a TA or RA, please fill out the TA/RA Application Form and mail it along with your other documents to the Department.
Applicants who wish to be considered for assistantships must submit their application materials by January 15. All other applicants must submit their applications to our department by March 1 for Fall admittance and October 15 for Spring admittance.
If accepted for our graduate program, a letter will be sent informing you that the Civil Engineering Department's Graduate Committee has recommended you for admission. Official Admission will be sent from the Admissions Office. You must respond to all forms received from that office to become a student at the University of Colorado.
An advising stop will be placed on an incoming graduate student's University record when it is activated (the $200 refundable deposit has been paid). This stop will be removed when the student has contacted their advisor.
Enrollment can be deferred for up to one year. A written request (e-mail is acceptable) must be sent to the Graduate Coordinator for a deferment. If the deferment is requested to establish residency, one course per semester can be taken through Continuing Education (ACCESS program) at a lower rate than non-resident tuition. With advisors approval, up to three courses taken before beginning our graduate program can be applied to your degree.
If you have any problem or question in the application process please contact the Department's Graduate Coordinator.
Applicants can check their application status on the apply yourself website.

The requirement for admission is a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with at least a 3.0 (B) grade point average or equivalent. Four letters of recommendation (academic) and two original transcripts from each college or university attended are required. Prior to admission, students from countries where English is not the native language must demonstrate a full command of the English language by making a satisfactory score (530 on the written exam, 200 on the computer based exam or 72 on the internet based exam) on the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL).
